Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Is this truly 100% organic?

Yes! Our beans are certified organic, meaning they're grown without any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers. Every origin—Mexico, Papua New Guinea, and Nicaragua—is fully certified organic.

What does Rainforest Alliance certification mean?

Rainforest Alliance certification means farms meet rigorous standards for climate-smart agriculture including minimum 40% canopy cover, species diversity, water protection systems, organic farming practices, fair labour conditions, and community support. It's considered equivalent or superior to traditional fair trade.

How fresh is the coffee when I receive it?

We roast in small batches on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, typically within 1-2 weeks of your order. This is dramatically fresher than supermarket coffee, which often sits in warehouses for 6-12 months before reaching shelves.

Should I order whole bean or ground?

Whole bean stays fresher significantly longer and allows you to grind fresh before each brew for maximum flavour and aroma. Choose ground if you don't have a grinder or strongly prefer convenience we'll grind it fresh for you.

What grind size should I use?

Depends on your brewing method: Coarse (French press, cold brew), Medium (pour-over, drip coffee), Medium-fine (aeropress), Fine (espresso). If ordering ground, let us know your brewing method.

Does organic coffee taste different from regular coffee?

Yes! Organic coffee often tastes cleaner, brighter, and more complex because healthy, chemical-free soil produces healthier plants with more developed flavour compounds. You're tasting pure coffee, not chemical residues or pesticide notes.

Can I make espresso with these beans?

Absolutely! This blend works excellently for espresso, producing rich crema, balanced flavour, and full body. Use fine grind and extract for 25-30 seconds. Perfect straight or as base for milk-based drinks.

Why does this cost more than supermarket coffee?

Organic farming is more labour-intensive without synthetic shortcuts, certification is rigorous and costly, yields can be lower, we pay farmers fairly (not exploitatively), and we roast in small batches for freshness (not mass production). You're investing in exceptional quality, your health, farming communities, and environmental sustainability.

How should I store the beans?

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place away from heat, light, and moisture. Avoid fridge/freezer as moisture and food odours can affect flavour. Use within 4-6 weeks of opening for best taste.

Is this fair trade?

Our coffee is Rainforest Alliance certified, which includes comprehensive fair labour practices, living wages, safe working conditions, community investment, healthcare access, and sustainable livelihoods. Many experts consider this equivalent or superior to traditional fair trade certification.

What's the caffeine content?

Similar to regular coffee approximately 80-100mg per standard 250ml cup (varies based on brewing method and strength). Caffeine content is determined by coffee variety and roast level, not organic status.

Can I use this for cold brew?

Yes! This blend makes exceptional cold brew—smooth, naturally sweet, low-acid, and incredibly refreshing. Use coarse grind, 1:4 ratio (coffee to water), and steep 12-24 hours in fridge.

Will one bag last a month?

Depends on consumption. The 500g bag makes approximately 33 cups (using 15g per cup). For one person drinking 1-2 cups daily, it lasts 2-4 weeks. The 1kg bag makes approximately 66 cups.
